Monmouth IL Area Guide

Monmouth is the county seat of Warren County in Illinois and is part of the Galesburg Micropolitan Statistical Area. Monmouth is the home of Monmouth College, Monmouth Park, Harmon Park, North Park and more. It is the host of the annual Prime Beef Festival. Known regionally as the “Maple City,” residents and visitors alike find Monmouth charming and welcoming.

Monmouth History

Monmouth was founded in 1831. The land where the town was established was given to a soldier, John Talbot, as payment for service in the War of 1812. Talbot was so pleased with the new land that he sent word back to his friends in Kentucky, and in 1828 a group of them came to see for themselves.

The 1850’s brought two major additions to the town. The first was the creation of the Monmouth Academy in1853, which became the Monmouth College in 1856. The second major addition was the arrival of the first railroad to Monmouth. The town became a major hub for the region when three railroads put lines to or through Monmouth.

Monmouth in the early days was supported by farming and a few farm implement companies. Good clay was found near Monmouth and several potteries were founded. Monmouth is home to two pottery companies today including Western Stoneware founded in 1906. This trend of prosperity ended with the great depression and the town did not begin to recover until the end of World War II and never regained totally its former glory.

Art Presenter Program – AAUW
The Art Presenter Program features monthly presentations by area volunteers that promote visual art appreciation in areas schools, grades K - 6.

Knox-Galesburg Symphony
Come enjoy the magical quality the Knox-Galesburg Symphony brings to the community and experience entertaining evenings filled with the music of great composers and memorable soloists under the direction of Maestro Bruce Polay.

Maple Leaf Community Concert Series
Monmouth College and the greater Monmouth Community enjoy a historic and continuing close relationship. The College is committed to supporting and enhancing that relationship through cooperative ventures such as the Maple Leaf Community Concert Series. It is our goal to provide a rich educational and cultural environment for all citizens of the Monmouth Area.

Orpheum Theatre
The Orpheum Theatre is a beautifully restored theatre, built in the vaudeville days of early 1900s. Described as “a veritable house of enchantment” when it opened its doors in 1916, the Orpheum Theatre continues to be a place of beauty and a showcase for the arts in western Illinois.

Warren County Public Library
The Warren County Library is truly an excellent resource for all county residents. Branches: In addition to the Main library in Monmouth, there are three branch libraries: Kirkwood, Alexis and Roseville.

Wells Theater
Warren County is lucky to have a fine theatre department at Monmouth College. Each semester students put on several plays from contemporary hits to timeless classics.
